The Support Association for Eisenach–Kindel Traffic Airport (registered association) was founded on March 2, 1995, at Wartburg Castle with the aim of integrating the former Kindel military airfield into the economic life and tourism of the Wartburg region as quickly as possible. What may sound like an ordinary association history would hardly be worth mentioning, were it not for the association’s special purpose.
When it was founded, history already knew many citizens’ initiatives against airfields, but a support association for the airfield—that was new.
The association set itself the task of significantly improving conditions for air traffic in the Wartburg region through continuous support of the airfield operator in planning and expansion, and of establishing Eisenach–Kindel Traffic Airport as a key element of infrastructure.
Eisenach–Kindel Traffic Airport has meanwhile become, like other infrastructure facilities for passenger and freight transport by road, rail and water, one of the classic transport infrastructure assets of the Wartburg region. It ensures the region’s air transport links to domestic and international economic centres and is of considerable economic importance both as a location factor and as an economic factor.
“This service is an important and necessary addition in one of Thuringia’s strongest economic regions.”
(Reinhard Krebs, former District Administrator of the Wartburg district, at the general meeting on 09/08/2016)
Having played a modest part in this development is still the justification for the association today; over the past twenty years, its members have made a valuable contribution to the future of the Wartburg region.
The association currently has around 50 members, including numerous companies and private individuals from the Wartburg region who have been committed for years to the positive development of the airfield.
You, too, can become a member of the Support Association for Eisenach–Kindel Traffic Airport (registered association).
The association provides information on current developments at the airfield and in the aviation-specific environment via the PDF-based “Luftpost”.
